Cyclones Cruise Past Southern Miss, 7-1
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Iowa State used a five-run fourth inning and a strong pitching performance from Rachel Zabriskie to defeat Southern Miss, 7-1, Friday afternoon at the Razorback Invitational. Iowa State is now 8-10 this season.
Southern Miss (11-4) scored first, getting on the board in the second inning on Lauren Castellvi's double that plated Logan James.
But the Cyclones bounced back, scoring seven unanswered runs to win for the first time in 10 tries this season when their opposition scored first.
The five-run fourth inning started with USM pitcher Gabby Luciani walking Johnson and Sydni Jones singling to left field. Southern Miss then committed an error, allowing Johnson to score to knot it up at 1-1.
After an unconventional fly-out double play, Amanda Bradberry delivered a run-scoring single and stole second. The Cyclones then took advantage of another error, tacking on three more two-out runs to go up 5-1.
Kelsey Kidwell and Heidi Kidwell drove in runs in the inning.
The Cyclones got another run in the fifth and seventh innings to make it 7-1.
In the fifth, Carrie Monroe beat out an infield hit to plate Jones. Kelsey Kidwell singled in the seventh, scoring Bradberry, who reached on a base hit before stealing second in the inning.
The rest of the work was done by Zabriskie (8-5), who turned in a dominating performance. The junior gave up just five hits while striking out six in the win.
Bradberry, Heidi Kidwell and Kelsey Kidwell each collected two hits for the Cyclones. Alex Johnson ran her hitting streak to six games with a second inning single.
Kelsey Kidwell also drove in two runs for ISU.
The Cyclones handed Luciani (3-1) her first defeat of the season. The freshman hurler allowed seven runs on 11 Cyclone hits.
Iowa State will be back in action Saturday against Drake and Arkansas.
