Faces of the Field: Westwood's Haylee Staton
|
|
Senior pitcher Haylee Staton was featured in this Friday's issue of the Austin American Statesman. Here is part of her interview:
Now that you're in the second round of the playoffs, what has been the key to the team's success?
The secret is going 100 percent the whole game, and when we get behind, to never give up and we will be OK.
What's your favorite softball memory?
The day I was told that UTSA wanted to offer me a full ride to play for them, and then the day I called coach (Lori) Cook and committed. It was such a great feeling to know that I had found the school for me and was going to get to fulfill my dream of playing Division I softball.

UIL Schedules Altered Due to Swine Flu
|
|
We will not be participating in any softball games until May 11 due to the Swine Flu outbreak and death in Texas.
We will practice as long as school is in session. If they shut down our school district then we will not be able to practice as a team. The softball playoff format will be: Bi-District and Regional Quarter Finals will have the option to have a 2-3 series. Area and Regional Finals will be 1 game only. They are trying to keep the State Tournament the same weekend as originally planned.
We will now be playing May 15th and 16th. We cannot compete in any games until May 11.
Thank you for all of your support and understanding during this time of a state and national crisis, your daughter's health is the upmost important concern to our staff, our school district, and the state of Texas.

Final Home District Ball Game With Seniors
|
|
Tonight is a very special night. Not only does Westwood have to beat Cedar Park tonight to secure a play-off position, the Seniors are sharing their last district home game at the Warrior Softball field. The Warriors have won the last four district ball games to keep them in the race and the Seniors have been a huge part of the success.
Here is a small blog about how special these 3 senior girls are to head coach, Tiffany Gates.
"Emily Prehoda has been the bright light in my 8 years of coaching. I have never seen a kid work so hard to reach her dream of getting into an Ivy League school and continuing her softball career at Kenyon College! She always brings laughter and intensity to practice-a great combination from a very versatile athlete. Emily has taken on the role of shortstop after playing outfield for me for the last two years. Her dedication and willing to take on this role shows her passion for the game and her athletic ability to step up as immediate leader. She is the epitome of a team player. Emily will do great things in life; she will be very successful in everything she does"
"Haylee Staton is an amazing athlete with incredible talent. She brings an immediate force with her speed and offensive/defensive skills. She has stepped in a huge role as the starting pitcher for us. I am so proud of her for working on her weaknesses and fine tuning her strengths to keep us in the fight for the play-offs. Coaching Haylee the last four years has been an amazing experience. I will miss her intensity and her competitive drive in practice and in games. Haylee's knowledge of the game has developed and prepared her for the next level at the University of Texas-San Antonio. I see Haylee setting records and I look to see her become the next Southland Conference Freshman of the Year."
"When think about dedication and the Heart of a Warrior, I think of starting center fielder, Megan Stockberger. She came back from a broken ankle her freshman year to becoming my starting center fielder for the last 3 years. Although she has chosen to not further her career in the game of softball-she has given me all she has over the last 4 years. She not only is the most consistent outfielder I have ever coached at Westwood, she makes very hard catches look incredibly easy. She works just as hard in practice as she does in a game and her passionate efforts have been proven effective. Megan will create great things for herself, because of her outstanding work ethics."
"This group of seniors are very special to me. I stepped into the Westwood program in the fall of 2005 and had the privilege to start off my career here with the "The 3 Amigos!"
They will always be close to my heart because of their consistent dedication, loyalty, commitment, and heart."
